A Week in December

A Week in December

by Sebastian Faulks

Arlene Almas: This absorbing story set in contemporary London touches on many aspects of life in today’s world: out-of-control finance, home-grown terrorism, teen drug use taking young people past the bounds of sanity, online role-playing games compensating for the dullness of ordinary daily existence, and the cattiness and competitiveness of upper middle class social life. Certainly there is much to satirize in the characters’ lives, but their fears and strivings are all too real, and I couldn’t help caring very much about the outcome for each of them. “A Week in December” is well-written with excellent dialogue.
