And the Mountains Echoed

And the Mountains Echoed

by Khaled Hosseini

Debbie Weiss (07/05/13): Khaled Hosseini is one of my favorite authors. His two previous books, "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns" read like poetry to me. The author always emphasizes family members' relationships, love, and obligations to each other. "And the Mountains Echoed" is written similarly.

The book begins with the introduction of Saboor, a widow who has remarried, and his two children, Abdulla and Pari. Abdulla and Pari are children he had with his first wife. We follow the lives of each family member --- and their respective friends, relatives and acquaintances throughout the years. I don't want to elaborate too much, for fear it will give the story away. Suffice it to say, there are many sub-plots, but they always lead back to the two siblings, Abdullah and Pari. The action moves back and forth between Afghanistan, France, the U.S. and Greece.

I always come away from a Hosseini book with a new knowledge of Afghanistani culture, so this was an educational novel for me. I truly enjoyed the book, but I would have to admit, it was not my favorite of Hosseini's three novels. I think the sub-plots were a little too disjointed and I found it a little bit difficult to follow the inter-relationships. Still, I would definitely recommend this book for a delightful read.

Dale Israel (07/02/13): Khaled Hosseini's third book And the Mountains Echoed proves once again what a gifted author Hosseini truly is. If you enjoyed his other two novels (The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns) you will find this epic tale of loss, love and hope equally enthralling. I was fortunate to hear Hosseini speak a few weeks back and listening to how he developed the characters for this book made the reading experience that much more enjoyable. How refreshing it was to see a man who was catapulted to fame maintain a sense humility. The fact that he created a foundation to fund housing for Afghani refugees elevated my opinion of him and made me respect him even more. If you're in the mood for a well crafted novel with characters that come to life, this is the perfect summer read for you. 4+
