Lab Girl

Anything is Possible

by Elizabeth Strout

Overview:Recalling Olive Kitteridge in its richness, structure, and complexity, Anything Is Possible explores the whole range of human emotion through the intimate dramas of people struggling to understand themselves and others.

Here are two sisters: One trades self-respect for a wealthy husband while the other finds in the pages of a book a kindred spirit who changes her life. The janitor at the local school has his faith tested in an encounter with an isolated man he has come to help; a grown daughter longs for mother love even as she comes to accept her motherís happiness in a foreign country; and the adult Lucy Barton (the heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton, the authorís celebrated New York Times bestseller) returns to visit her siblings after seventeen years of absence. Reverberating with the deep bonds of family, and the hope that comes with reconciliation, Anything Is Possible again underscores Elizabeth Stroutís place as one of Americaís most respected and cherished authors.

Faith Bowers (05/21/17): I am in Elizabeth Strout fan as I've had read every book written by her I have enjoyed them all immensely.I read them as soon as they come into my library. This book is in the style of Olive Kitteridge. There are short stories that could stand by themselves but when combined together give us a story. This case, we learn about The people who knew Lucy Barton while she was growing up. These are the stories about their lives now and thoughts about their pasts. I think it is amazing that she only makes a cameo appearance but we learn all about Lucy Barton in her hometown and the people around her.

Saying that before you read this book, you must read my name is Lucy Barton. Wrote a review on that book on Jan 16,2016 which is about her mother daughter relationship. My favorite chapter in this book is when Lucy Barton comes home to visit with her brother Pete, a loner living in their last family home. Before the visit Pete makes an attempt to clean the house, buy a new rug and get a haircut. While talking to her brother their sister arrives who doesn't allow for any small talk, only truths.Lucy then has a come apart and the visit gets cut short. I feel lifted and am absorbed when reading every sentence. Neither of these books are very long therefore sit down and enjoy.
