Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage

by Haruki Murakami

Overview: Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage is the long-awaited new novel—a book that sold more than a million copies the first week it went on sale in Japan—from the award-winning, internationally best-selling author Haruki Murakami.

Here he gives us the remarkable story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. It is a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.

Faith Bowers (04/17/17): This is Japanese popular fiction. I wanted to see what the Japanese read. It is a fast read about 5 high school best friends. In the middle of their college years they kick the only one who moved away for college out of their group. This is the story of Tazaki, how he changes because of this devastation and finally finds out why and reconnects with the others 16 years later. There could be a depth into the dreams and how they connect with his real world that I did not explore. I enjoyed the character development of Tazaki and his journey through his young life. He does not have a lot of friends and so the other characters are only understood in the depth that Tazaki sees them. The book does ends positively, so we think.
