Death Comes to Pemberley

Death Comes to Pemberley

by P.D. James

Gwendolyn Waring (06/11/12): I must say that I was hesitant to read this novel. "Pride and Prejudice" is one of my all time favorite classics. I was pleasantly surprised. James has captured the essence of the original novel and given us a "worth waiting for" update after these many years. I have read the original novel at least 5 times since it was required reading in middle school, so all the characters are as fresh in my mind as the first time. But for those who do not remember as well, the author refreshes one's memory about the relationships of the characters in the original without being condescending. I thoroughly enjoyed "catching up" with Lizzie and Darcy after their marriage in this mystery; as well as their family members and friends. I also enjoyed the period setting for a trial, it was well done.

Arlene Almas (05/06/12): Pemberley, the estate of the intriguing Mr. Darcy - does it sound familiar? It's from "Pride and Prejudice," Jane Austen's magnificent novel about the love story of the spirited Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, and about Elizabeth's parents and four sisters. All the characters and settings from Austen's book now make up the world of "Death Comes to Pemberley," P.D. James' captivating story of murder at the estate where Elizabeth and Darcy have been living since their marriage and raising their two sons. On the eve of the annual autumn ball, which has consumed the entire household (and it's a big one - think Downton Abbey) in a frenzy of preparation, one of Elizabeth's sisters, Lydia, arrives screaming hysterically that her husband, the disgraced Wickham, has been murdered in the woods of Pemberley. Although Wickham is found alive, his friend Captain Denny is not; an investigation ensues to solve the mystery of Denny's death - and Wickham is the prime suspect. James re-creates the atmosphere and tone of Austen's masterwork in this brilliant novel.
