Arlene Almas: Penelope Lively
tells the fascinating story of a very unusual family of
husband, wife, au pair, and six children. Each character
has his or her own distinct personality, and the interactions
among them are sometimes funny and other times heartbreaking.
There is a secret in this family which is eventually revealed,
but the stories of the children growing to adulthood would be
sufficient to keep the reader engrossed. The author's writing
style keeps the narrative moving along smoothly;
the dialogue is lively (pardon the pun), and descriptions
are spot on, as the British would say. I greatly enjoyed
this book.
