Gods in Alabama

Gods in Alabama

by Joshilyn Jackson

Ricki Brodie: Arlene Fleet escaped from her small hometown in Alabama to go to college in Chicago. She made a deal with God that if she kept three promises, 1) she would never lie, 2) never fornicate outside of marriage, and 3) never go back to her hometown then God would protect her secret. She kept her promises for ten years. She learned how to answer questions partially so that others could supply the end and she wouldn’t have to lie.

Arlene, or Lena as she as known in Chicago, was in a relationship with Burr who kept pushing her to meet the family. Lena had her reasons to keep him hidden from mentally challenged mother, aunt and uncle who raised her and her cousin who was like a sister to her. A person she followed around in high school ten years ago, Rose Mae Lolley, came to her door in Chicago asking questions about what had happened to a schoolmate. Arlene, given an ultimatum by Burr confronted about her past must decide whether to break her promises and deal with her past.

I really enjoyed the novel and don’t want to give away any secrets. It will be more enjoyable to see them evolve.
