Interpreter of Maladies

Interpreter of Maladies

by Jhumpa Lahiri

Anne Ferber: This is a glorious collection of short stories, the first of which, published by this author. It also won a Pulitzer. In this collection, she concentrates on first generation Bengali emigres, as well as some left behind, who mix old and new customs to define their lives and relationships. The result is so charming and revealing that one is left with insights into unknown cultures bringing new understanding.

A young couple use old methods to bring about new insights into their fading relationship. A young man brings his arranged Bengali bride to the Boston area and sees her through another's eyes to help his own appreciation of her. Another man finds his wife's eccentricities frightening, but adjusts his thoughts at a party of American friends.

The writing is sparse and true. A wonderful read.
