Matterhorn

Matterhorn

by Karl Marlantes

Ricki Brodie: This novel, 30 years in the development, is not for the faint of heart. Set in 1969, it drops you into the jungles during the Vientnam War and takes you out on numerous missions taking questionable targets, all with the objective of search and destroy, kill or be killed. The men have to deal with the enemy as well as leeches, jungle rot, immersion foot, dehydration and starvation while dealing with racism within their ranks. All of this is in addition to officers constantly battering the men about body counts. Reading the book you feel the tension, emotion and fear the men face before, during and after battles as body counts go up on each side. The book revolves around a central character and the people closest to him in the bush. It is a journey you will never forget.
