My Stroke of Insight

My Stroke of Insight

by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D.

Judy Stanton (06/06/13): The brain is an amazing organ, and neuroscientist Jill Taylor is a great instructor whose book encourages readers to better understand how they can control its function, and ultimately, their lives, by taking control over right/left brain balance. For anyone whose family/friends have been touched by stroke, the insights she conveys are invaluable. It's not just the normal "warning signs" for stroke, but concrete information on what the stroke victim feels, how the person needs to be treated, and how recovery is possible over the very long term...hers took 8 years. I read this at the same time I was reading a book about autism, and it made me realize that although we feel awful for the person suffering brain trauma, the individual may not feel that "suffering," in fact, they may feel their own kind of happiness and peace. I think everyone could relate to her discussion about the left brain's the "mind chatter" with negative thoughts and concerns we try to stop/control. Very interesting book.
