Oracle Quest

Oracle Quest

by Lisa Wright DeGroodt

Darla Grant: ORACLE QUEST is a lovely fantasy tale that will have you coming back for more. Frolic through the Interdimensional Void with Katie and meet the inhabitants of a magical Land.

Katie Gaber is an unsatisfied young woman. She has reached that crossroads between college graduation and a career, but feels like there is more in store for her than a normal nine-to-five job. She has no idea that her future is about to change so drastically that she will be forced to re-evaluate everything in her life. At the end of a particularly rough day, Katie falls asleep on the couch and wakes to find her destiny.

Katie awakes to find herself in a forest glen facing a strange man in long robes. He claims to be a wizard named Beaufin, who has magically transported her across the Void into a parallel dimension called the Land. Beaufin explains that Katie has untapped magical abilities that called to him. She is highly skeptical when he tells her that her power equals that of the Landís sovereign and Prince, who has been kidnapped and imprisoned by the evil Master Wizard.

Katie is also introduced to Beaufinís companion Maxt, the Captain of the Princeís guard. Maxt and Beaufin are working together to locate and rescue the Prince. Katieís disbelief is quickly suspended by the real demonstrations of magical power that she is able to produce under Beaufinís direction. As they trek across the regions of the Land, the three are forced to hide from the Master Wizard and his army. Their journey becomes quite adventurous as they escape from the Wizardís army, meet the Seer of the Land, and face the mythical Griffin on their journey to find the Prince. Along the way, Katie begins to tap into the strength that had always been there hidden deeply within her. As she discovers her own powers, she also develops a true love of the Land, its inhabitants and her two stoic companions.

Katieís experience of the Land comes full-circle when she meets Prince Stefan. The two have an immediate bond that grows with Katieís time in the Land. As she fights alongside the Prince of the Land, she cannot deny her attraction to him and his beautiful Land. It is a dimension with no knowledge of Evil, making its citizens vulnerable to Evilís deception through its foothold in the Master Wizard. Katieís home, the World Dimension (modeled on modern Earth), has been fighting Evil for centuries and has successfully maintained a balance between Good and Evil. She is uniquely qualified to fight the underhanded means that Evil uses as she has faced them herself. The Landís call to her for help opens up that secret yearning she has for a more enriched life and fills that emptiness with purpose.

ORACLE QUEST was my first foray into the fantasy genre. Katie is an engaging and funny character who had me cheering for her to take the reins and defeat Evil. Katieís struggle to come to terms with the strength inside her is juxtaposed nicely with the fantasy action. DeGroodt has created an exceptional universe for her characters that is charming, innocent, dangerous, and fantastical all at the same time. She has a gift for characterization that brings Katie, Stefan and the rest to life. I recommend this book to all readers especially those who love fantasy. This is also a great book for young adult readers, so parents and teens can read it together. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I am glad that this is only the first in a great series. I plan to run out and read the next book, RELIC QUEST, as soon as possible.
