A Mercy

Peony in Love

by Lisa See

Judy Stanton: I am a Lisa See fan, but this book has been sitting by on my bedside table for some time, because I had heard it was no match for her others. While that is true, the book was a good read, exposing the reader to a whole complex world and afterworld of Chinese life, customs and beliefs. It is a penultimate love story, full of mysticism and ancient belief systems. I normally don't enjoy "ghost" type stories. But, here, I felt that the author did bring a lot of research and the issue of women's voices being heard through literature to the forefront, and I felt like I learned something by reading this book. Sometimes it's a challenge to read outside of your comfort zone, and I'm glad I did. 3+
