Picking Cotton

Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption

by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton

Dale Israel: 'Picking Cotton' is based on the true story involving a young Black man (Ronald Cotton) who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman (Jennifer Thompson-Cannino) in the early 1980's. Cotton served 11 years in prison before being exonerated. Amazingly, Cotton and Thompson-Cannino eventually developed a warm and close relationship. This was a very quick read which offered insight into the issues facing women who have been physically violated as well as giving a vivid description of what prison life is like. This was a thought provoking book that made me stop and wonder just how many people are wrongly jailed for crimes they didn't commit. An interesting read.
