Proof of Heaven

Proof of Heaven

by Eben Alexander, M.D.

Judy Stanton (05/07/13): I liked the story behind the book Proof of Heaven more than I liked the book itself. One thing I've learned working in the medical field is that brilliant doctors aren't necessarily brilliant communicators. Because all their professional life is spent speaking in medical jargon, when they are communicating with a lay audience, they often find it difficult to KISS (keep it simple, stupid). Alexander lost me in the discussion of consciousness, dark matter, Hemi-Sync, binaural beats, etc. and I don't think I ever got the difference between Om and God. Some of the expressions he used in describing his odyssey..."the realm of the earthworm's eye view" ...for example, just wasn't the kind of description to which I could relate. There's no question that his message -- that we are all part of a larger universe where love is central -- is compelling; however, I felt that the book was not.

Debbie Weiss (04/23/13): I don't know what I really expected from this book. I had heard great reviews and thought it would be an interesting read. The background story is about the spinal meningitis that the author, a neurosurgeon, contracted and the coma that he fell into as a result for over a week. During that time, Dr. Alexander states that he had an NDE, a Near Death Experience. Much of the book describes the NDE in detail. While the story was interesting, I don't think the book will convince any non-believers to begin believing in an afterlife. It will, though, help people who do believe feel as though their beliefs have been confirmed. Whether you are a believer or not, the subject matter is one that could be discussed at length and the book helps one come to terms with what they do believe about life after death.

Jackie Wertymer (04/14/13): I agree with Barbara’s earlier review of Proof of Heaven. It is indeed a wonderful, uplifting, thought provoking book, which spans all faiths, offering a glimpse into life after death. Dr. Alexander, a neurosurgeon with an impressive medical background and credentials, contracts a rare virus and is in a coma for a week. His family is faced with the decision of whether to continue him on life support or face the fact that he will most likely be brain dead. It is during this week that Dr. Alexander goes back and forth telling his story, along with accounts from his family, about what happens during this harrowing ordeal. I actually had goose bumps reading this book, but it left me with such a wonderful feeling that yes, we can look forward to something grand after our time on earth. I am a believer and have read other near death accounts from other believers, but this book differs in that Dr. Alexander was not strong in any faith and basically went along with the scientific community regarding life after death. Proof of Heaven is a quick read but one that I think is especially important to anyone who has lost a loved one.

Barbara Crout (04/07/13): This book is amazing, astounding and breath-taking. No matter what faith you hold, this book will open up new understanding into the life journey that we all face. Dr. Alexander has been a Neurosurgeon his entire career, focusing on research into brain activity. He contracts a deadly bacteria which renders him "brain dead" and into a coma for seven days. His survival baffles the experts. Those who have worked in the medical field have seen patients who survive experiences with the unexplainable; those in the scientific world have insisted that "science and spirituality cannot coexist...they are mistaken". He now feels that it is his duty to tell his story to the world. A must read!
