Secrets of Eden

by Chris Bohjalian

Judy Stanton: After hearing Chris Bohjalian speak a year ago at the Jewish Book Festival, I knew I'd found my new favorite author. He is a great storyteller in person as well as on paper. I had read Double Bind for a book club, and have since read Midwives and Skeletons at the Feast. His latest book is Secrets of Eden, and it is another great read. It starts out like a Jan Karon book -- she writes about the happy little town of Mitford and its church ladies and pastor -- but the Secrets Of this Eden quickly turns into a fast-paced whodunit that's difficult to put down without knowing how it will turn out. The approach of learning about the story from several characters' perspective makes it even more engaging. And Bohjalian tackles another important societal issue-- domestic abuse. Well done.
