The Appeal

The Appeal

by John Grisham

Debbie Weiss: This is the first John Grisham book I have read in a long time. It deals with a theme seen often in books, the big bad corporation which dumps chemical wastes inappropriately and causes cancer clusters in nearby communities. Two lawyers (a husband and wife team) take it upon themselves to represent a woman who lost both her husband and son to the disease. Against all odds, they win the case against the large corporation and the jury awards a huge settlement to their client. However, the corporation's lawyers appeal the verdict.

Most of the book revolves around how the corporation proceeded to ensure that they were going to win the appeal.  Their tactics made me angry and made me realize that "justice" can be bought if you have enough money.  I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it.
