The Art of Hearing Heartbeats

The Art of Hearing Heartbeats

by Jan-Philipp Sendker

Faith Bowers (04/04/12): Do you remember Love Story by Erich Segal? This book tells a love story during the early 20th century in Burma before WW2. The passionate love of two "crippled" young adults grabs onto your heart much like Love Story but even better. A modern day daughter searches for her father in Burma after finding some clues to her father's disappearance four years earlier. The characters become alive for you as the tale is told by a local Burmese man who befriends the daughter. The many contrasts between NYC and small town Burma, between the poor and the rich and what choices do we truly have makes for a poignant discussion as well. Originally written in German it is translated beautifully with descriptions of a tiny impoverished town in Burma that has remained mostly the same throughout the century. I truly enjoyed this book which is why I am sharing with all of you.
