The Distant Hours

The Distant Hours

by Kate Morton

Overview: The #1 internationally bestselling author of The Forgotten Garden mesmerizes readers with this haunting tale of long-buried secrets and the twists of fate that can alter lives forever.

It starts with a letter, lost for half a century and unexpectedly delivered to Edie’s mother on a Sunday afternoon. The letter leads Edie to Milderhurst Castle, where the eccentric Blythe spinsters live and where, she discovers, her mother was billeted during World War II. The elder Blythe sisters are twins and have spent most of their lives caring for their younger sister, Juniper, who hasn’t been the same since her fiancé jilted her in 1941. Inside the decaying castle, Edie searches for her mother’s past but soon learns there are other secrets hidden in its walls. The truth of what happened in “the distant hours” has been waiting a long time for someone to find it. In this enthralling romantic thriller, Morton pays homage to the classics of gothic fiction, spinning a rich and intricate web of mystery, suspense, and lost love.

Faith Bowers (03/26/16): Edie Burchill is the only child of a middle class English family who loves her books. She knows very little about her mother's past. A letter arrives for her mother from 50 years ago that will change their relationship and Edie's life. This letter would have changed her mother's life if it had arrived on time all those years ago.

This book is also the story of Milderhurst Castle and its occupants, 3 sisters stuck in the past of pre WWII due to their father, a famous writer's manipulative behavior. The three sisters and Edie and her mother, Meredith's lives are intertwined even though they spent very little time together. Though the main story is set in early WW2, it emulates a gothic novel with some horror and some romance in a castle with a filled in mote.

I enjoyed Ms Morton's writing. Her conversations and prose are written with very descriptive words, the words that I only wish I had the nerve to speak. The Distant Hours is the third novel by Australian author Kate Morton and I think it is her best.
