The Girl You Left Behind

The Girl You Left Behind

by Jojo Moyes

Dale Israel (09/23/13): The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes is a novel written in two parts. The first part takes place during WWI in German occupied France. Sophie and her sister run the family's bar/restaurant while their husbands are off fighting the war. Times are difficult. There is little food or clothing to keep them warm. The sisters are forced to serve German soldiers who are responsible for their dire circumstances. Sophie's husband is an artist who painted an emotionally provocative painting of her. It's this painting...The Girl He Left Behind...that brings her comfort and hope during his long absence. Fast forward 100 years to England and a young woman named Liv. In Part II of this novel, we discover that Liv's husband dies unexpectantly (also leaving her behind). The only thing bringing her comfort is the painting he bought her on their honeymoon...yep, you guessed it....The Girl He Left Behind! Sophie's ancestors are trying to recover the painting and therein lies the conflict. While not a "delicious" book...afterall few books are...I would say that this novel was rather tasty. I really, really enjoyed it. It was compelling and I was drawn in immediately. My only minor complaint is that I was so involved with the first part of the book I didn't want it to end. Beginnig Part II was like starting a new book. Once I got over this disappointment, however, I quickly became involved and greatly enjoyed this novel. I highly recommend!
