The Girls of August

The Girls of August

by Anne Rivers Siddons

Carolyn Lanier (07/28/14): I have been a fan of Anne Rivers Siddons for a long time, so I was looking forward to this book about four friends who had met when their husbands were in medical school, and got together every August for a vacation at a beach to maintain their friendship after they had all moved to different locations at the completion of their husbands' training. After the tragic death of one of the four friends, the surviving three stopped getting together until the widower of their deceased friend remarried a very young woman who invited them to her beach house on a secluded island.

The book is a quick read, and I found myself disappointed in the minimal character development, and a story full of a series of implausible events. I might have enjoyed it more if I had not read better books by this author. Hopefully her next book will be better.
