The Outcast

The Outcast

by Sadie Jones

Arlene Almas: "The Outcast" is a very intensely moving story about boy growing up to young manhood in post-World War II England (yes, I'm back in England again!). Lewis is an extremely troubled boy, but in the traditional British stiff-upper-lip way his emotional states are barely acknowledged by his father, let alone empathized with or treated in any way - until something disastrous happens. In a neighboring home a young girl, Kit, is also growing up with troubles of her own; a bond develops between the two, although very slowly and not realized by both of them simultaneously. Other characters, such as Lewis' stepmother and Kit's older sister, are fully developed and fascinating in their own right. I really enjoyed this book, and recommend it to our readers.
