The Road

The Road

by Cormac McCarthy

Gail Reid: "The Road" is the story of an unnamed father and son in post-apocalyptic America. The man and the little boy are on the road for years in what seems to be -- but is never spelled out -- the aftermath of nuclear disaster.

The highlight of this slim novel is the relationship between father and son and the astonishing efforts of the dad to protect and nourish the boy in an environment where food is scarce and the few remaining humans are to to be feared.

The writing is spare and almost poetic. I have found that men love this book and Cormac McCarthy's other writing as well. Many women, including me, find "The Road" to be too distressing and far too dark and bleak.
