Uncommon Arrangements

Uncommon Arrangements: Seven Portraits of Married Life in London Literary Circlese 1910-1931

by Katie Roiphe

Judy Stanton (02/13/14): The most common reaction to Uncommon Arrangements is something like "and we thought people of our generation had marriage issues!" Roiphe does extensive research of literary folks who wrote extensive autobiographies, letters and missives about their most intimate relationships, so that she can piece together their interesting and most often, unorthodox, romantic relationships.

While it was certainly eye-opening to learn about the questioning of traditions of the Victorian era, I often found the reading to feel more like a PhD dissertation.
