When the Crocodile Eats the Sun

When a Crocodile Eats the Sun

by Peter Godwin

Gail Reid: Peter Godwin is a U.S. based journalist raised in Zimbabwe and educated in the U.K. "When the Crocodile Eats the Sun" is Godwin's account of his trips to Africa over a 10-year period to monitor the health of his elderly parents. His mother and father settled in Zimbabwe some 50 years before; have had successful careers as a physician and engineer; and are committed to the country and won't leave.

This book should be a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the deterioration of Zimbabwe under the terrorist rule of Robert Mugabe. Crimes against the white population are now rampant; food shortages are frequent; and the money has no value.

Godwin tells the story of his family's migration from the U.K. to Zimbabwe and his recent discovery of his father's secret past. In between the author's efforts to get healthcare for his parents and protect their farm, he intertwines the story of his country's decline.

Peter Godwin is a talented writer and the story is engrossing on every page.
