When We Argued All Nightby Alice Mattison |
Judy Stanton (08/02/12): A quirky book about
friendship between two Jewish men over a lifetime, I found When we argued all night to
be a pretty good read. The challenges of friendship through the Great Depression,
marriages, family issues, changing economics, etc. show how people grow apart and yet
maintain a lifeline to each other. The most challenging issue was during the
McCarthy-era witch hunts when one of the friends was a member of the communist party,
and not "informing" could get his friend kicked out of a job. I really liked the central
place the cabin in the Adirondacks took in calling the two families back to
reminders of good times together, when life was simpler. 3+
